About 60 guests attended the launch of ‘Elephant in Our Zoo’, on Wednesday evening in the Santos Conservation Centre at the Adelaide Zoo.
Elephant in Our Zoo by Victoria Raine
Wednesday 7th September 2011 SANTOS CONSERVATION CENTRE, Adelaide Zoo
The book is a collection of stories told by Adelaide’s famous icon, Samorn the Elephant, from her own perspective.
Peter Whitehead, Adelaide Zoo Curator, was in charge of events for the evening and provided a few colourful stories of his own about Samorn. Peter’s early days at the zoo were full of interactions with Samorn, and he remembers her very fondly, not as being a massive elephant, but rather as a head and particularly, as an eye!

Most adults (those old enough!) would have seen Samorn towing the cart around the zoo, picking up the never ending peanuts from the poles around the circuit or standing in her enclosure shifting weight form leg to leg. It seems that Samorn was quite a character.
Victoria also told a few stories including the amazing bond between Samorn and her long time keeper, Hero Nuus. It was an honour to have Hero’s Family present for the launch. We also learnt that you should ‘NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A GIRAFFE’!
It was a great launch and many books were sold on the night and autographed by Victoria.
